At GRK Civils, we know construction can be demanding – both physically and mentally. That’s why we dedicate time throughout the year to shine a spotlight on the wellbeing of our people. Our recent Physical and Mental Health Focus Month was all about encouraging teams to take a step back from the fast pace of site life and put health first.
Walk-and-Talks and Health MOTs
At Our Cultural Heart, the team hosted a walk-and-talk session. It gave everyone the chance to step away from work for a while, catch up with one another, and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. Creating space for these conversations helps to normalise talking about mental health and checking in on colleagues.
We also welcomed a visiting nurse to several of our sites to carry out mini health MOTs. From blood pressure and cholesterol checks to heart rate monitoring and general wellbeing advice, these sessions provided a valuable reminder of the importance of taking just a few minutes to focus on personal health.
Marking the Month Across Our Sites
Each of our sites chose to get involved in a way that worked best for their teams. Activities ranged from group walks to quizzes, sitting down for breakfast together, to Friday Fish & Chip lunches – the variety of activities showed that supporting health and wellbeing doesn’t have to be complicated.
Building a Supportive Culture
These initiatives are one of the many ways we’re working to strengthen a culture that values the wellbeing of our people. Just as importantly, they serve as a reminder that looking after health doesn’t stop once a focus month ends. Small actions like taking a break together, having a chat, or checking in on a colleague go a long way in making wellbeing part of our everyday culture.
