An iconic venue: GRK Civils at Leeds First Direct Arena
GRK Civils proudly played a key role in the creation of the Leeds First Direct Arena, an architectural landmark and world-class entertainment venue in the heart of Leeds. Partnering with BAM Construction and Leeds City Council, we contributed our expertise to deliver a project that has become a cultural hub, hosting global artists and events since its grand opening in 2013.
Expertise in Action
Our involvement spanned from May 2011 to May 2013, encompassing a diverse range of groundworks and structural elements, including:
- Substructure and superstructure works for the reinforced concrete (RC), steel, and precast structure.
- Construction of pad foundations, FRC bases to cores, shear walls, retaining walls, and dock levellers.
- Development of vehicle restraint walls along the A58 site access road.
- Ground floor slabs (both suspended and ground-bearing), RC columns, and in-situ stairs and landings.
- Service trenches, internal and external services, drainage systems, including attenuation tanks and grey water harvesting tanks.
- Insitu roof construction and external service yard works.
Our team navigated the complexities of a city-centre site, overcoming logistical challenges posed by limited access and a naturally sloping terrain, while maintaining high standards of safety, efficiency, and quality.
Overcoming Unique Challenges
The Leeds Arena project presented several engineering and logistical hurdles:
- Simultaneous Core Construction: Early construction of four cores was critical to align with the programme for the steel frame and precast seating installation. This required precise coordination, supported by early engagement with DOKA for efficient ‘Jump’ Form construction.
- Concrete Roof Pouring: The sloped roof design posed significant challenges in concrete placement. We mitigated risks of slumping by using hi-rib metal chairs at close centres and strategically scheduling the use of large 58m/63m mobile concrete pumps, overcoming national equipment shortages.
- Tight Urban Footprint: Operating within a confined city-centre location, our team expertly managed site logistics, crane operations, and material deliveries, ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding community.
Project-Specific Highlight
The Leeds First Direct Arena is celebrated not only for its striking design but also for its community impact. Built on the former site of Leeds Polytechnic, it has become a premier entertainment destination, named the “Best New Venue in the World” at the 2014 Stadium Business Awards.
GRK Civils’ contribution extended beyond technical excellence. We actively engaged with the local community, delivering 224 weeks of work experience, supporting a number of apprentices, and collaborating with various Leeds-based companies.
Our efforts fostered employment opportunities, skills development, and a lasting legacy within the city.

Conclusion
In partnership with BAM Construction, GRK Civils played an instrumental role in transforming Leeds’ cityscape with the First Direct Arena. Our commitment to innovation, precision, and community engagement ensured the successful delivery of this iconic venue, reinforcing our reputation as a partner beyond groundworks.
Through our expertise and collaborative approach, GRK Civils continues to set the standard for excellence in complex, large-scale projects that shape communities and inspire future generations.
