Q&A
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background before joining GRK Civils?
Hi, I’m Oscar and I joined GRK Civils as a Quantity Surveying Apprentice. I previously studied A Levels at Pontefract New College in Accounting, Computer Science and Games Design. I also gained some work experience in the construction industry, which helped shape my decision to pursue a career in this field.
What made you interested in Quantity Surveying?
My dad works in the construction industry, which gave me the chance to experience a range of roles through work experience. Because I enjoyed maths at school, I thought quantity surveying would be a good fit – it lets me use numbers every day while being involved in real construction projects.
What appealed to you about doing an apprenticeship instead of university?
I wanted to do an apprenticeship because it gives me proper hands-on experience while I’m learning. I can see how the jobs I’m doing actually affect the project, which helps me pick things up quicker. Plus, I’m working towards my qualifications and earning at the same time.
What are you most looking forward to learning in your role here?
I want to understand more about how projects are managed and see how they develop right through to the end. I’m also keen to get better at working with different people and improving my communication along the way.
What’s been the most interesting or surprising thing you’ve learned so far?
The biggest surprise has been how much detail goes into every part of a project. Even small elements, like the different types of materials used, all serve specific purposes depending on the needs of the job.
Which GRK project are you most looking forward to being involved in?
I’d say Our Cultural Heart in Huddersfield – it’s a huge project and an important development for the community, so I’m really glad I get the chance to work on it.
What’s a typical week like for you at the moment?
Right now, my routine is two days in the office, two on site at jobs like Harrogate College and Our Cultural Heart in Huddersfield, and one day at Leeds College of Building. It’s a good balance between learning on the job and studying.
How do you think this apprenticeship will support your long-term career goals?
I think the apprenticeship is setting me up with a strong foundation in the industry. I’m getting technical skills, problem-solving experience, and the chance to learn from people who’ve been doing the job for years. It also means I’ll have three years of real experience by the time others are finishing university.
Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?
Outside of work I enjoy playing football, watching Southampton games around the country, and spending time with friends. I also run a small business reselling rare items and trainers, which keeps me busy!
Bringing apprentices into the business is part of our commitment to investing in people and supporting the long-term future of the sector. With opportunities to learn both on site and in the classroom, Oscar is starting out on a strong path, and we look forward to seeing the contribution he’ll make to our projects and the wider industry.
