Job

A58 Woodhouse Tunnel Strengthening & Refurbishment Works

Description

As a major artery and vital piece of infrastructure within the centre of Leeds, Woodhouse Tunnel - which carries the A58(M) beneath the busy city centre and Leeds General Infirmary, as well as adjacent to the university – sees over 75,000 cars pass through every day.

Undertaking over 400 nightshifts within a two year period, we provided a wide breadth of specialist trades, fixing over 500 tonnes of reinforced steel, placing over 5000m2 of formwork and pumping nearly 2000m3 of concrete.

Expert planning and logistics were taken into consideration as the removal of traffic control processes would have resulted in rush hour gridlock throughout Leeds’ main highways network. Traffic management was implemented at key strategic points of the day to minimise any traffic disruption.

SUMMARY

Clear communication with all stakeholders to deliver a wide breadth of specialist works was crucial to the projects sucess. Strengthening this vital piece of infrastructure within Leeds City Centre's highways network was additionally challenging due to the shear volume of traffic which passes through on a daily basis.
